Alabama’s “America’s Amazon” to be Protected by The Nature Conservancy
Over 7,900 acres of Alabama’s coveted land, nicknamed “America’s Amazon” for its rich biodiversity and wildlife, is set to be preserved through a significant investment by The Nature Conservancy in Alabama, as well as a Patagonia shareholder and an undisclosed donor.
The Nature Conservancy in Alabama announced that it successfully closed a deal worth $15 million+ to secure the purchase of 7,990 acres situated at the top of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta is known as the second-largest undisturbed delta system in North America.
The specific area that has been acquired, aptly named “the land between rivers,” is an ecological gem. It boasts a plethora of creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes that contribute to the delta’s reputation as an unparalleled home to an impressive array of freshwater species in the United States.
Elated by the successful acquisition, Mitch Reid, the state director for The Nature Conservancy in Alabama, expressed, “This is one of the most important conservation victories that we’ve ever been a part of. It’s protected a vitally important complex of land, almost 8,000 acres, critically important to the health of the Mobile Delta and then, by extension, Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.”
The preservation of this invaluable and foundational habitat will undoubtedly prove beneficial to both the residents and wildlife of Alabama, as well as the southeastern United States at large.
While the exact figure of the deal was not disclosed, Reid mentioned that it exceeds $15 million. The significant contribution includes a generous $5.2 million donation from the Holdfast Collective, a nonprofit shareholder of Patagonia, along with an additional $3 million from TNC. An anonymous donor has contributed a staggering $10 million into a revolving loan fund.
This remarkable and far-reaching conservation effort signifies a major milestone in the ongoing mission to safeguard our environment and promote a sustainable future for all.
