Ukraine Bans Telegram Use for Security Concerns
Ukraine has enforced a ban on the use of the Telegram messaging app by government officials, military personnel, and other critical infrastructure workers. This decision was driven by serious national security concerns.
The announcement was made by the National Coordination Centre for Cybersecurity (NCCC) through a Facebook post, highlighting the app's potential risks. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's GUR military intelligence agency, emphasized that the issue with Telegram goes beyond freedom of speech and delves into security concerns.
"I have always advocated for freedom of speech, but the issue of Telegram is not a question of freedom of speech; it is a matter of national security," Budanov stated.
Security Risks of Telegram
The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine pointed out that Telegram is actively exploited by adversaries to conduct cyber attacks. These attacks include spreading phishing messages, distributing malicious software, tracking user locations, and collecting intelligence to aid in targeting Ukraine's facilities.
Ban on Official Devices
To mitigate these risks, the use of Telegram has been prohibited on the official devices of state authorities, military personnel, and employees of sectors related to security and defense. This ban also affects operators of critical infrastructure.
However, the restriction does not apply to personal phones or individuals who require the app for official duties.
Telegram's Response
Telegram has addressed these concerns by stating that it has not shared personal data with any country and assured that deleted messages are permanently erased and unrecoverable.
