SpaceX Targets Next Week for Third Test Flight of Starship Rocket
SpaceX, the pioneering space exploration company led by Elon Musk, is planning its third test flight of the Starship, which is hailed as the world’s most powerful rocket. The previous two missions ended in explosions before reaching orbit, but the second flight achieved a significant milestone by achieving stage separation for the first time. According to SpaceX, the much-anticipated launch could take place “as soon as March 14,” pending the approval of a launch permit by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Standing at an impressive height of 120 meters (395 feet) and boasting an astounding thrust of 17 million pounds at launch, the Starship surpasses the power of NASA’s most potent rocket, the new Space Launch System, nearly doubling its capability. Both of the Starship’s launches thus far have originated from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
This upcoming test flight is seen as an opportunity for SpaceX engineers to apply the lessons learned from previous launches and achieve several ambitious objectives. These include successfully executing the ascent burn of both stages, operating Starship’s payload door, demonstrating propellant transfer during the upper stage’s coast phase, initiating the first-ever re-light of a Raptor engine while in space, and conducting a controlled reentry of the Starship. With the aim of achieving full reusability, both stages of the rocket will ultimately make controlled landings in the sea. The Super Heavy portion will touch down in the Gulf of Mexico, while the Starship will splash down in the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX has set its sights on developing a versatile spaceflight system capable of transporting both crew and cargo to destinations such as Earth orbit, the moon, and eventually Mars and beyond. In fact, NASA has already reached an agreement with the company to utilize a modified version of the Starship for the Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2026, which aims to land two astronauts on the moon.
