Plateau State Partners with Algorand Foundation to Explore Blockchain Use Cases and Foster Innovation
Plateau State, Nigeria, has entered into a partnership with the non-profit organization Algorand Foundation to drive innovation and discover practical applications for blockchain technology. This collaboration aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and economic prospects for the residents of Plateau State.
Situated in the heart of Nigeria, Plateau State is the twelfth largest state in the country, boasting a population of approximately 4.2 million people. Known for its pleasant climate, with temperatures dropping as low as 10 degrees Centigrade, the state offers a conducive environment for exploration and development.
The partnership between Plateau State and Algorand Foundation will involve the creation of pilot programs that utilize blockchain technology in various sectors. Additionally, the Algorand Foundation will lend support to the upcoming Incredible Music Festival (IMF) by conducting a workshop on non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The workshop aims to educate artists on how to convert their creations into NFTs and effectively sell them on Web3 marketplaces.
Since 2021, the Algorand Foundation has actively invested in the education of software developers across Nigeria. A staggering number of over 500 software developers were trained in 2023 alone, with more than 10% hailing from Plateau State.
As part of this collaboration, the Algorand Foundation will also be a sponsor of the Incredible Music Festival, scheduled to take place from February 22-24, 2024, in Jos, Plateau State. Additionally, the foundation plans to organize a workshop in conjunction with Algogems, an NFT marketplace, during the festival. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce creatives to Web3 and familiarize them with the digital economy.
Engr. Datong Dominic Gwaman, the Director General of Plateau State Information and Communications Technology Development Agency (PITCDA), emphasized Nigeria’s position as a leader in the African digital economy sector. He praised the National Blockchain Policy as a significant stride towards blockchain adoption in the country. The collaboration with the Algorand Foundation is expected to revolutionize public services, fostering efficiency, transparency, and wider access, while simultaneously generating new employment opportunities.
Ben Onuoha, the Country Head for Nigeria at Algorand Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the partnership with the Government of Plateau State. He emphasized the importance of capacity development, particularly in training software developers, and the creation of real-world use cases that yield social and economic benefits.
