OpenAI Announces One-Year Free ChatGPT Go Plan for Indian Users
OpenAI has unveiled a limited-time promotion offering its ChatGPT Go subscription free of charge for one year to users in India who register starting November 4. This move is part of the companys strategic effort to deepen its presence in one of its most significant markets.
The promotion applies to both new and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India. While OpenAI has not disclosed the exact duration for which the offer will remain available, the company emphasized the importance of this initiative in expanding user engagement.
ChatGPT Go: Affordable Access with Enhanced Capabilities
Launched in India in August at a price point below $5 per month, ChatGPT Go is OpenAIs most economical paid subscription plan. It offers users up to 10 times more usage capacity than the free tier, including advanced features such as image generation and file uploads. Additionally, ChatGPT Go boasts improved memory functions, enabling more personalized and context-aware interactions.
Following its India debut, the service expanded to Indonesia and, more recently, to 16 additional countries across Asia.
India’s Strategic Importance for OpenAI
India, with its population exceeding 1.4 billion and over 700 million smartphone users, represents a pivotal market for OpenAI. The company inaugurated its New Delhi office in August and is actively recruiting local talent to support its growth ambitions.
CEO Sam Altman has identified India as OpenAIs second-largest market after the United States. Despite the high volume of app downloads—over 29 million in the three months leading up to August—monetization has remained challenging, with in-app purchases totaling just $3.6 million during that period.
25Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity weve seen from our users has been inspiring,25 said Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT. 25Were excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.25
Competitive Moves in India’s AI Market
OpenAI faces competition from companies like Perplexity and Google, which are also targeting Indias vast and youthful user base. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to 360 million Airtel subscribers. Similarly, Google has launched a free one-year AI Pro plan specifically for Indian students.
These initiatives underscore the intense competition to capture market share in Indias rapidly growing AI ecosystem.
Upcoming DevDay Exchange Conference in Bengaluru
OpenAI is scheduled to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4. The event is expected to feature India-specific announcements aimed at local developers and enterprises, further cementing OpenAIs commitment to the region.
India remains one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with millions of daily active users engaging with the chatbot.
25Excited for our first DevDay Exchange event in India 🇮🇳 on November 4. Ahead of that, we have some exciting updates coming for India users over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!25

OpenAIs decision to offer a free one-year ChatGPT Go subscription in India represents a calculated effort to accelerate user adoption and build long-term loyalty in a key emerging market. While monetization challenges persist, the strategy focuses on expanding the user base and cultivating developer engagement ahead of anticipated growth in Indias AI ecosystem.
- Opportunities: Rapid user base expansion, increased developer ecosystem engagement, enhanced brand presence in a high-potential market.
- Risks: Potential revenue shortfall due to free subscription, intense competition from local and global AI providers, challenges in converting free users to paying customers.
Impact: Neutral to positive. While short-term revenue may be impacted by the free offering, OpenAIs increased footprint and engagement in India position it favorably for sustained growth amid rising AI adoption.
