Microsoft AI Image Generator Raises Concerns over Inappropriate Content
AI engineer Shane Jones at Microsoft exposes alarming content generated by Copilot Designer, an AI image generator, violating responsible AI principles.
In a recent revelation, AI engineer Shane Jones, who has spent six years at Microsoft, has uncovered troubling issues surrounding the AI image generator known as Copilot Designer. Jones, a practitioner of red-teaming – a practice involving testing software for vulnerabilities – discovered distressing content generated by the tool, which is said to be in violation of Microsoft’s responsible AI principles.
Jones stumbled upon sexually explicit and violent depictions of women, alongside scenes of underage drinking and drug use in the images generated by Copilot Designer. Surprisingly, the AI image generator also produced inappropriate scenarios featuring beloved Disney characters, leaving Jones deeply concerned about the ethical implications of the tool’s capabilities.
Disturbed by the findings, Jones reported his discoveries internally to Microsoft in December. However, his pleas to remove Copilot Designer from the market were met with resistance from the tech giant. Determined to address the issue, Jones took the matter into his own hands and penned letters to both the Federal Trade Commission Chair, Lina Khan, and Microsoft’s board of directors, urging them to promptly remove the AI image generator from public use until robust safeguards could be implemented.
In an effort to mitigate potential harm caused by the tool, Jones proposed that Microsoft add explicit disclosures to the product and modify its rating on Google’s Android app, making it clear that Copilot Designer is intended for mature audiences only.
Despite Jones’ efforts, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will take appropriate action to address the serious concerns surrounding Copilot Designer. As the tech industry continues to grapple with the ethical challenges posed by AI, incidents like this underscore the need for stringent safeguards to ensure responsible use of these powerful technologies.
