Google Expands Gemini AI in Chrome to US Desktop Users with New Agentic Features
On Thursday, Google announced the nationwide rollout of its Gemini AI within the Chrome browser for all Mac and Windows desktop users in the United States. The feature had previously been accessible only to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
US users with their language set to English can now interact with Gemini via an icon in the top-right corner of Chrome, enabling them to request clarifications or modifications of complex information on any web page. For instance, users can ask Gemini to adapt a recipe, such as converting a banana bread recipe to be gluten-free.
Enhanced Multitasking and Browsing Capabilities
Gemini’s new functionalities allow it to operate across multiple tabs, facilitating the comparison and summarization of information from different websites. This capability supports tasks like organizing travel plans or comparing products without manual tab switching.
Additionally, Gemini will soon be able to retrieve web pages from previous browsing sessions, simplifying the process of revisiting past content without searching through browser history. Users will be able to pose queries like “On which site did I see the walnut desk last week?” or “What was that blog I read on back-to-school shopping?”
Deeper Integration with Google Services
Google is also enhancing Gemini’s integration with its suite of services, including Calendar, YouTube, and Maps. This integration allows users to perform actions such as scheduling meetings or accessing location details directly within the browser context. For example, Gemini can navigate to specific timestamps in YouTube videos upon user request.
The company highlighted upcoming agentic capabilities that will enable Gemini to perform routine online tasks autonomously, such as booking haircuts or ordering groceries. Gemini will navigate websites, add items to shopping carts, and prompt users to complete final checkout steps. These agentic features are expected to be available within Chrome in the coming months.
AI Mode in Address Bar and Scam Protection
Google is integrating its AI Mode search feature directly into Chrome’s address bar, allowing users to submit complex queries with follow-ups for deeper exploration. For example, users can request customized product comparisons based on personal conditions, like mattress recommendations for a side sleeper with back pain.
The address bar will also suggest relevant questions based on the current page’s content, offering an AI-generated overview and enabling follow-up inquiries.
To combat the rise of AI-generated scams—including fake virus alerts and fraudulent giveaways impersonating trusted brands—Google will deploy its Gemini Nano model within Chrome to detect and protect users from such threats.
Automatic Password Reset Feature
Google announced a new AI-powered password security feature that simplifies fixing compromised credentials. When Chrome detects that a user’s password has been exposed in a data breach on supported sites like Coursera, Spotify, Duolingo, and H&M, it can automatically generate and save a new secure password with a single click.
These updates collectively underscore Google’s effort to deepen AI integration within Chrome, enhancing user experience, security, and productivity.
FinOracleAI — Market View
Google’s expansion of Gemini AI and the introduction of agentic browsing capabilities position Chrome as a more intelligent, productivity-focused browser. The AI-powered multitasking, enhanced search, and security features could increase user engagement and retention. However, the success depends on user adoption and effective handling of privacy concerns related to AI accessing browsing data.
Investors should monitor user feedback on the agentic features and the efficacy of AI-driven scam detection. Competition from rivals like OpenAI’s Operator may influence Google’s pace of innovation in this space.
