Cybersecurity Camp Hosted by FCPS Teaches Students Valuable STEM Skills
School's out for the summer, but at Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS), the learning continues. The first day of Cybersecurity Summer Camp kicked off on Monday, providing students with a unique chance to delve into cybersecurity and STEM practices.
“We wanted to during this summer provide our campers with an opportunity to really explore what cyber is all about,” shared Vee Pryor, Program Manager for Magnet and Specialized Programs.
The camp uses a game called KC7, designed as a cybersecurity training tool that makes learning fun for beginners. While it can be played online at home, the camp brings this game to life.
“This is actually a game created for post-secondary, and we said let’s try with elementary and middle school students. Last year, they were just blown away by how quickly they were able to learn the game,” Pryor added.
For some, KC7 is just a game, but for one volunteer, it was life-changing.
“I played the game, got really good at it, and actually learned how to do cybersecurity through that game. I had a complete career change from watch and jewelry repair into cybersecurity,” shared volunteer Jibby Saetang.
While elementary and middle school students might not be ready to pick a career yet, Saetang hopes the camp will inspire them.
“That’s why I’m here, because it’s fun, and I want everyone to do it!” Saetang said.
By hosting this camp, FCPS aims to inspire and educate the next generation of cybersecurity experts through hands-on, enjoyable experiences.
