VulcanX and FortisBC Partner to Advance Hydrogen Technology

In a significant move towards a greener energy future, FortisBC Energy Inc. and VulcanX Energy Corp. have entered into a collaboration to support the development of hydrogen pyrolysis technology. This innovative approach promises the production of zero-emission hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas, facilitating an environmentally friendly and cost-effective energy solution.

Supporting Low-Carbon Innovations

FortisBC is actively supporting VulcanX through its Clean Growth Innovation Fund. The initiative aligns with British Columbia's CleanBC strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while meeting the growing energy needs of the province. "Hydrogen has the potential to significantly contribute to a lower-carbon energy future," notes Joe Mazza, FortisBC's vice president of energy supply.

Regulatory Support and Technological Advancement

The Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation (GGRR) allows utilities like FortisBC to invest in hydrogen production. This regulatory backing is pivotal for FortisBC's shift from conventional natural gas to renewable and low-carbon gases, such as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and potential hydrogen sources.

Innovative Technology from VulcanX

Originating from MéridaLabs at the University of British Columbia, VulcanX utilizes a unique pyrolysis process to separate natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon. This method employs a "bubbling" technique with molten metal, offering an efficient and consistent output. The funding from FortisBC will aid in the engineering and design of a facility capable of producing up to one tonne of hydrogen per day.

Renewable Natural Gas Explained

To understand VulcanX's contribution, it's essential to grasp the concept of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). RNG is derived from biogas, which comes from decomposing organic waste. Unlike conventional natural gas, RNG is a cleaner alternative that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. With each addition of RNG to the gas system, the reliance on fossil fuels diminishes.

FortisBC's commitment to innovation in the energy sector, coupled with VulcanX's groundbreaking technology, represents a promising stride towards a sustainable energy future for British Columbia.
