Owners Report Rust Forming on Tesla Cybertruck

Just a few months after its highly anticipated release, some owners of Tesla’s Cybertruck are reporting issues with rust formation on the vehicle’s stainless steel body. Although stainless steel is known for its resistance to rust, it is not completely immune to the corrosive substance.

The Cybertruck, with its unique polygonal design and promises of an “ultra-hard stainless steel” body, initially drew a lot of attention and excitement. However, the recent reports of rust spots have tarnished the vehicle’s reputation for durability.

The concerns were first brought to light on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum by a user named “Raxar” in a thread titled “Rust Spots/Corrosion is the Norm.” The user posted images of their Cybertruck’s body after just two days of driving in the rain, showing clear signs of rust formation. Some members speculated that the rust could be caused by “rail dust” from the transportation process, but these claims have yet to be confirmed.

Another user reported experiencing corrosion on their Cybertruck after just 11 days in the rain in Los Angeles. This prompted further concerns about potential contamination during the production process of the vehicle.

It’s worth noting that the price of the Cybertruck has increased significantly since its initial reveal in 2019. With prices now starting at $60,000, owners have higher expectations for the vehicle’s condition and durability.

One possible reason for the corrosion reports could be the misconception that stainless steel doesn’t require much maintenance. However, Tesla’s Cybertruck maintenance documentation clearly states that the vehicle does not have a clear coat, which is the outermost layer of transparent paint that serves as a protective barrier. Without this clear coat, any scratches that appear on the stainless steel panels are directly on the surface, making the body more susceptible to rust.

Tesla advises owners to promptly remove any corrosive substances and not wait until the next scheduled wash. The company emphasizes that while the stainless steel exterior is more resistant to dents and dings than other vehicles, it still requires proper care to prevent rust formation.

As the Cybertruck continues to make its way to more customers, Tesla will need to address these rust concerns to ensure the satisfaction and confidence of its owners.

Analyst comment

Negative news. As an analyst, the market may see decreased demand for the Cybertruck due to concerns about rust formation. Tesla will need to address the issue promptly to maintain customer satisfaction and confidence.
