CDK Global Cyber Attack Update: Company Working to Restore Systems

CDK Global has announced that it has started the process of restoring systems used by 15,000 car dealerships across the United States. These dealerships were forced to shut down their systems due to two recent cyber attacks. According to a statement from the company on Sunday, the recovery process is expected to take “several days.”

“We are continuing to actively engage with our customers and provide them with alternate ways to conduct business,” the statement said. However, as of now, there is “no concrete timeframe for resolution of the CDK cyber attack,” according to a post by automotive insider Car Dealership Guy on X.

CDK Suffers Two Cyber Attacks

This massive cyber attack on CDK Global first occurred on Wednesday, causing car dealerships across the country to halt their operations since they lost access to vital systems that facilitate vehicle sales. The company's software, which is used by over 15,000 car dealerships, underscores the immense impact of the attack, bringing the sector to a standstill almost immediately.

Just one day after the initial attack, a second attack forced the company to shut down its systems again. CDK Global, which sells products to car dealerships to help with sales and managing clients, informed customers about the second attack on Thursday morning. This has created a critical situation for both the company and its clients, causing further delays in restoring systems and limiting the operations of dealerships across the country.

CDK Reportedly Decides to Pay Off Cyber Attackers

A report has emerged claiming that the group behind the attacks on CDK Global demanded tens of millions of dollars in ransom. According to a confidential source, CDK plans to make the payment to the cyber criminals, who are believed to be based in eastern Europe.

CDK is warning customers to be cautious of bad actors who may try to exploit the situation by contacting them and attempting to gain access to systems. They urge their clients to communicate only with known official CDK Global employees to avoid further complications.

By addressing the issues promptly and engaging with their customers continuously, CDK Global aims to mitigate the disruption caused by these cyberattacks and restore normal operations as soon as possible.
