British Airways announces free messaging apps for passengers on flights
Starting from next month, British Airways passengers will be able to use messaging apps free of charge during their flights. In order to access this complimentary service, passengers must sign up for British Airways’ free loyalty scheme. The use of onboard messaging will be limited to one device per person. This move comes as part of the airline’s £7 billion “transformation plan”.
The airline has revealed that the service will be rolled out over a two-week period beginning on April 3. This means that travellers will be able to send and receive text messages on popular apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and Teams. Currently, over 80% of British Airways’ Heathrow-based fleet and all Gatwick aircraft are equipped with wifi, with plans to outfit the rest of the fleet by the end of 2025.
It should be noted that passengers who wish to send or receive images, videos, attachments, browse the internet, or stream content will need to purchase passes. These passes are available at prices ranging from £4.99 to £21.99.
In addition to the messaging app service, British Airways has also introduced a new feature for passengers entitled to hotel rooms and food. They will now receive vouchers directly on their electronic devices. This will be welcome news for many travellers, as it eliminates the need to pay upfront for expenses during disruptions and then seek reimbursement later.
This initiative is part of British Airways’ broader “transformation plan”. Other areas covered by the plan include the introduction of new short-haul and first class seats, the use of artificial intelligence to boost flight punctuality and reliability, the opening of a new lounge at Dubai Airport, and the relaunch of flights between Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur, as well as between Gatwick and Bangkok.
British Airways CEO Sean Doyle expressed his excitement about the transformation plan, stating, “We’re on a journey to a better BA for our people and customers. Our £7 billion investment over the next two years will revolutionize our business. We will be receiving new aircraft, introducing new cabins, focusing on operational performance and customer care, and tackling our environmental impact. We are heavily investing in the development of a new ba.com website and app, and we are dedicated to improving the overall experience for our customers.”
