Aurora Expands Autonomous Truck Routes with Fort Worth to El Paso Launch

Aurora Innovation has announced the addition of a 600-mile driverless trucking route connecting Fort Worth and El Paso. This marks the company’s second commercial corridor for its autonomous freight service, following its initial Dallas-to-Houston route launched earlier this year. The expansion was disclosed alongside Aurora’s third-quarter earnings report, highlighting the company’s progress toward scaling autonomous freight solutions across the United States.

Operational Milestones and Strategic Customers

Since commencing commercial operations in May, Aurora’s fleet of five self-driving trucks has surpassed 100,000 driverless miles on public roads. The company’s next target is to extend its autonomous network to Phoenix before the end of the year. Aurora’s Fort Worth to El Paso route is designed to address logistical challenges faced by carriers, including driver shortages and the difficulty of completing long hauls within regulated driving hours. Key customers on this corridor include Hirschbach Motor Lines and Russell Transport.

Next-Generation Autonomous Hardware Integration

Aurora detailed advancements in its next-generation hardware, manufactured by Fabrinet and integrated into Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks. Production of hundreds of trucks equipped with this hardware is planned for 2026. The new hardware offers significant improvements in durability and performance while reducing overall costs by 50%. Notably, the updated lidar system doubles detection range to 1,000 meters and features enhanced sensor cleaning technology to ensure reliable operation under adverse weather conditions.
“The integration of Aurora’s next-generation hardware with the Volvo VNL Autonomous on the pilot line at our New River Valley facility marks an industry-first partnership and highlights the meaningful progress we are making together,” said Nils Jaeger, president of Volvo Autonomous Solutions. “By manufacturing trucks purpose-built for autonomy, we’re moving beyond prototypes and creating scalable solutions that are ready to meet the demands of a modern supply chain.”

Scaling Production: Partnership with Aumovio

Looking ahead, Aurora is collaborating with Aumovio (formerly Continental) to develop a higher-volume suite of autonomous hardware scheduled for production in 2027. This partnership aims to facilitate manufacturing at scale, with plans to produce tens of thousands of self-driving trucks.
