Google Renames AI Language Model Bard to Gemini
Google has announced the renaming of its AI large language model interface from Bard to Gemini, along with the launch of an advanced version that will directly compete with Open AI’s ChatGPT Plus. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, shared the reasons behind the name change in an interview with CNBC TV, where he also revealed that he has been using Gemini to brush up on his coding skills.

During the interview, Pichai expressed his enjoyment in using Gemini, stating, “We have been having fun with it. I have been brushing up my coding skills.” He also highlighted one interesting use-case scenario where a friend of his used Gemini to write a better copy for a house that was put up for sale by analyzing the architecture and furnishings of the home. Additionally, Pichai mentioned using Gemini to gather additional information about interesting things he comes across on his phone.
The Reason Behind the Name Change
Pichai explained that the decision to change the name from Bard to Gemini was based on their overall approach to building capable and responsible AI models. “Gemini is our approach, overall, in terms of how we are building our most capable and safe and responsible AI models,” he said. “Bard was the most direct way people could interact with their models. So, it made sense to just evolve it to be Gemini because you’re actually talking directly to the underlying Gemini model when you use it.”
Gemini Advanced: Google’s Most Capable Model
Pichai also spoke about Gemini Advanced, which is available to users through a paid subscription. He described it as having access to Ultra1.0, Google’s most capable model to date. Gemini Advanced offers enhanced capabilities, particularly in complex inquiries and multi-turn queries. Pichai added that it also excels in work space integration and is built to be multimodal, making it highly proficient when handling image attachments alongside queries.
Gemini’s Ability to Understand Images
According to Pichai, one of the most fascinating aspects of Gemini is its ability to make sense of images. He described a scenario where Gemini can analyze a series of images as if they were a video and answer questions related to them. The model has been trained not only on text but also on audio, images, video, and code, allowing it to mimic the richness of information present in the world.
The Future Frontier for AI Models
Pichai believes that Gemini represents the future frontier for AI models. He stated, “As humans, we see the world with the richness of information in front of us. And so we are getting our models to behave in that same way, and I think that represents the future frontier.” He also shared that Google plans to release more details about Gemini for developers and enterprises, viewing 2024 as the beginning of the Gemini Era.
