New AI Technology Counts Manatees in Real Time Using CCTV Cameras

Manatees, an endangered species vulnerable to environmental changes, are difficult to accurately count due to their herding behavior and water reflections. Researchers who track the manatee population in Florida face significant challenges in obtaining accurate counts. However, the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has made a breakthrough in this field. They have pioneered a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that utilizes a deep learning-based crowd-counting approach using CCTV camera images to count manatees in real time.
