Elon Musk, renowned CEO of Tesla and owner of the social media platform X, has publicly supported a proposed California bill that mandates safety testing on AI models. In a recent statement on X, Musk emphasized his long-standing advocacy for AI regulation, paralleling it with regulations for any potentially risky technology. He urged the state to pass SB 1047, underscoring the need for legislative measures to ensure AI technologies do not pose threats to public safety.
The Legislative Push in California
California has been a hub for technological innovation, but with that comes the responsibility of ensuring such advancements are safe and ethical. Lawmakers in the state have proposed 65 different pieces of legislation addressing various aspects of artificial intelligence this season. These proposals include requirements for proving algorithms are unbiased and protecting deceased individuals' intellectual property from AI exploitation. Support for AI regulation isn't limited to Musk. Earlier, Microsoft-backed OpenAI expressed approval for another bill, AB 3211. This proposed legislation focuses on the identification of AI-generated content, such as memes and deepfakes, which could spread misinformation, particularly during political elections.
