AUKUS Partnership Expands beyond Submarines into AI and Autonomy
The Australian, U.K., and U.S. trilateral security partnership known as AUKUS has gained attention for its focus on building nuclear-powered submarines. However, there is a less-talked-about pillar of the agreement which aims to foster advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy. The goal is to develop digital technologies such as robotics, intelligence sharing, and advanced computing. According to Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development and Emerging Capabilities Michael Horowitz, the cooperation between the three countries has been focused on exploring what AI cooperation with allies and partners looks like. Horowitz emphasizes that software is not a barrier to cooperation and that the three countries have made significant progress in AI development.
