The Growth of Artificial Intelligence and Its Impact

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of various industries and sectors, making it impossible to ignore its impact. Recognizing this, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in south-central Washington state has established a dedicated center for artificial intelligence. Dr. Court Corley, the lab’s chief scientist for artificial intelligence, explains that the decision to create the center stems from the realization that AI is playing a significant role in the lab’s missions, which include scientific discovery, energy sustainability, and national security. With over 6,000 staff, two-thirds of whom are scientists or engineers, the lab has already been engaged in AI research and application. However, the center will bring together the collective experience and expertise in AI to drive impactful research and tackle global challenges.
