Amgen's Strategic Move to Hyderabad: A New Tech Hub

Amgen, a prominent name in the biotechnology industry, has announced their plans to establish a new technology and innovation site in Hyderabad, India. This strategic expansion, named Amgen India, aims to enhance Amgen's digital capabilities globally, thereby advancing their extensive pipeline of medicines.

Why Hyderabad?

The chosen location for this ambitious project is Hitec City, a well-known suburb of Hyderabad. Amgen will occupy six floors of the RMZ Spire Tower 110. The city is located in Telangana, a state recognized for its exceptional talent pool in medicine, life sciences, and the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI).

David M. Reese, MD, the executive vice president and CTO at Amgen, emphasized that Hyderabad was selected for its world-class talent. This move allows Amgen to tap into the innovative spirit of a city that's rapidly becoming a hub for cutting-edge technology and research.

Preparing for the Future

With an operational target set for the fourth quarter of 2024, the Amgen India site is designed to accommodate up to 3,000 employees. The establishment of this site marks a significant step in Amgen’s journey to deliver innovations in healthcare, especially at a time when the global population is aging rapidly and requires more innovative solutions.

According to Reese, the convergence of biotechnology and technology enables Amgen to work with enhanced speed, confidence, and efficiency. This site is indeed a milestone that has been in preparation for over a decade.

Building Digital Capabilities

Initially, Amgen India will focus on building and scaling new technology solutions. These efforts are intended to enhance efficiencies across the company. The site will offer roles that bolster key areas such as AI, data science, and life sciences, along with other global capabilities over time.

Leadership and Vision

To guide Amgen’s expanding presence in India, Som Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the national executive for India. With this leadership, Amgen India is well-positioned to become a pivotal component of Amgen’s global strategy, driving innovation and supporting the company's mission to serve patients worldwide.
