Google Assistant Android App Now Gemini by Default, Phase Out of Assistant Imminent

Google has made a significant change to its Assistant Android app, as it is now being replaced by Gemini as the default virtual assistant. When users download the Assistant app on Android, they will now be greeted with Gemini, complete with a new app icon. This move comes shortly after Google introduced the Gemini Android app, which allows users to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini and designate it as their primary AI helper.

Interestingly, if users have also downloaded the standalone Gemini Android app, they will see two instances of Gemini listed on their apps list. However, users can easily switch back to Assistant by accessing the Settings menu within the Gemini app that appears once Google Assistant is downloaded. This will transform the app icon, displaying it as Assistant instead of Gemini.

Reports have emerged of a Reddit user who experienced the automatic switch to Gemini on their new Galaxy S24 Plus device without actively choosing to use Gemini instead of Assistant. Intriguingly, the user did not have the standalone Gemini app on their phone prior to the switch.

This recent development suggests that Google has plans to phase out Assistant entirely and replace it with Gemini. As Google now defaults to offering Gemini when users download the Assistant app, it appears that the company is laying the groundwork for this transition. It is expected that Gemini will gradually incorporate more Assistant features as its user base expands, signaling the beginning of the end for Google Assistant.

Analyst comment

Positive news:
– The introduction of Gemini as the default virtual assistant is seen as a significant change by Google.
– Users have the option to switch back to Assistant if they prefer.

As an analyst, I predict that the market will see a gradual shift from Google Assistant to Gemini as more users adopt Gemini, leading to the eventual phasing out of Assistant.
