Fresno Students Develop App to Aid Hispanic Community in Accessing Financial Information

At the Patiño School of Entrepreneurship in Fresno County, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in unique and business-focused courses during their first two years. This innovative approach to education allows students to explore various business models and experiment with different ideas until they find one with market potential. For seniors Ryan Arias, Raul Lopez, and Alexis Robledo, their business idea hit close to home. They founded Raices Unidas, a website and soon-to-be mobile app aimed at providing the Hispanic community with free access to essential financial information.

Addressing the Lack of Financial Literacy in the Hispanic Community

Coming from Latino households, the founders of Raices Unidas have witnessed firsthand the impact of a lack of financial literacy within their community. To address this need, they are developing a solution that includes videos and tools in Spanish, covering topics such as improving credit scores and making informed investment decisions. The platform will feature a catalog page, similar to Netflix, where users can access free courses, as well as a community page for one-on-one interaction.

Recognition and Support for the Entrepreneurial Endeavor

The dedication and hard work of these students has not gone unnoticed. Sean Begen, their teacher, commends their perseverance and is proud of their accomplishments. The Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation has also taken notice of Raices Unidas and its founders’ passion for helping Latinos. Impressed by their initiative, the foundation has provided a grant of $2,000 to support their entrepreneurial endeavor. Yery Olivares, a representative from the foundation, praises the students as young innovators and looks forward to seeing where their project will lead.

The Future of Raices Unidas: Financial Literacy for All

After graduation, the founders of Raices Unidas are determined to continue the work they have started. They believe that financial literacy is crucial for everyone and plan to expand their business to reach a wider audience. By providing accessible and free financial information, they hope to bridge the gap and empower individuals within the Hispanic community and beyond. However, the success of their venture will depend on their ongoing dedication and effort.

A Beacon of Hope for Financial Literacy

The creation of Raices Unidas by Fresno students showcases the power of education and entrepreneurship in addressing societal needs. Through their innovative app, these young founders are breaking barriers and providing valuable resources for financial education. As financial literacy remains a critical issue in communities around the world, initiatives like Raices Unidas offer a beacon of hope for closing the gap and empowering individuals to make informed financial decisions.
