Apple’s Hardware Team Undergoes Leadership Changes for Audio Features on AirPods and Other Products

In a recent update, Apple’s hardware team responsible for the exceptional audio features on AirPods and various devices has experienced significant leadership adjustments. Gary Geaves, pivotal in developing products like AirPods and HomePod, has stepped down as the VP of acoustics. Ruchir Davé, a distinguished team member, will succeed Geaves.

The hardware team, comprising 300 experts, plays a crucial role in designing Apple’s audio products, focusing on sound technologies and software features like spatial audio. They are also involved in creating innovative products such as smart displays and integrated iPad-HomePod devices.

This change is part of a broader transformation led by John Ternus. Another notable change includes Tang Tan, responsible for iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods design, leaving to join LoveFrom, Jony Ive’s firm, to work on an AI hardware device for OpenAI.

Geaves transitions to an advisor role reporting to Matt Costello, overseeing Beats headphones and HomePod. Under Geaves’ leadership, AirPods generated over $15 billion annually. The acoustics team is working on new product launches, expected in the upcoming months.
