Wayfair Introduces Consolidated Delivery Option to Improve Efficiency and Boost Sales
Wayfair, the online home goods retailer, is taking a page out of e-commerce giant Amazon’s playbook by offering customers the ability to have multiple orders delivered together in one consolidated delivery. This move is aimed at enhancing efficiency and increasing sales.
During an earnings call, Wayfair’s CEO and co-founder, Niraj Shah, revealed that this change is projected to reduce shipping costs despite a rise in order volume. In the last quarter, Wayfair processed 11.3 million orders, signifying a 2.7% uptick. The consolidated delivery option enables shoppers to pick a specific delivery date for multiple orders, specifically for business-to-consumer shipments.
While Wayfair has been providing consolidated deliveries for business-to-business shipments since 2017, this is the first time the company is extending this option to consumers. By incorporating this change, Wayfair aims to make substantial cost savings.
In a shareholder letter, Shah and co-founder Steve Conine underscored the significance of optimizing logistics operations and reducing expenses, as logistics constitute a noteworthy portion of costs in the industry. The introduction of consolidated delivery is viewed as a means to enhance the customer experience, streamline logistics, and ultimately drive profits. Shah believes that this new option may even encourage customers to make more purchases from Wayfair.
Apart from the consolidated delivery offering, Wayfair will also introduce “free white glove delivery” for bulky items or those necessitating installation. This service entails delivery agents aiding consumers in setting up their purchased items in their residences.
This delivery change announcement follows Wayfair’s disclosure of financial losses and the layoff of 1,650 employees earlier this year. The company posted a net loss of $174 million post the New Year.
Wayfair intends to roll out the consolidated delivery option in the near future, though an exact date has not been provided. With this initiative, Wayfair seeks to enhance its delivery services, optimize efficiency, and ultimately drive sales.
