Malls and Police Join Forces to Tackle Shoplifting Problem
Malls and police are teaming up to tackle the growing problem of shoplifting by using upgraded technology. One such example is Eastview Mall in Victor, which has been using this advanced technology for the past few years.
Wilmorite's High-Tech Solution
Wilmorite, the company managing several malls, is now using new technology to fight shoplifting. For instance, The Mall at Greece Ridge has started cracking down on theft with a system that alerts police when known shoplifters enter the property.
Al D'Agostino, vice president and corporate security director with Wilmorite, explained, "Either that information was given to us by police or we've experienced it here personally, where there's been some theft and they jump in a car and take off."
How the Technology Works
The new system involves cameras that read license plates, identifying vehicles tied to prior incidents. When a known shoplifter returns, an alert pops up on screens at both the mall security office and the police station.
"Once we know they’re on property and they see us, sometimes that’s enough for them to just go somewhere else," D'Agostino said.
Coordinated Efforts with Police
Sometimes, the alert might be for a different issue. In such cases, the mall receives a call from the police.
"They call us and let us know, hey, this car just came in. We try to find it for them — we’re like their eyes for that. Then we can direct them exactly where it went and maybe if someone got out of the car, we can get a good shot of them," D'Agostino explained.
Successful Results at Eastview Mall
The same technology has been in use at Eastview Mall in Victor for the last few years. Wilmorite reports that this has led to a 45% increase in the number of shoplifting arrests.
"Sometimes it’s desperation on their part, sometimes they just don’t really care or they just take a chance — but with our technology that we have here and we keep upgrading, keeping up with the times, I mean, we are able to get some really good footage and pictures that we can actually turn over to the police and then they can solve these issues," D'Agostino added.
Additional Police Presence
To further enhance security, a Greece police officer is assigned to The Mall at Greece Ridge, and two Ontario County sheriff’s deputies are stationed at Eastview Mall. This means that when a problem arises, it's not just mall security responding but also a police officer.
By using this innovative technology and strong police collaboration, malls are making significant strides in reducing shoplifting incidents and arrests. This partnership showcases a proactive approach to security and public safety in retail spaces.
