Roblox Launches Short-Video and AI Features Amid Heightened Child Safety Concerns
Roblox announced on Friday the rollout of new short-video and artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at enhancing user engagement, coinciding with increased scrutiny from lawmakers regarding the platform’s child safety practices.
The newly introduced feature, called Moments, allows users aged 13 and older to create and share video clips of their gameplay within an in-platform feed. To protect younger users, Roblox has implemented age restrictions ensuring that users below the age requirements for certain mature games cannot view related content. Each video uploaded to Moments will undergo moderation, and users will have the ability to flag inappropriate content, according to Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief of safety. Moments is being released initially in a limited capacity starting Friday.
In parallel, Roblox is set to launch AI-powered tools before the end of the year that enable users to generate sophisticated 3D objects tailored to the visual style of games they develop. Anupam Singh, the company’s senior vice president of engineering, highlighted examples such as futuristic monster trucks created via AI. These AI-generated assets will also be subject to moderation to ensure compliance with community standards.
The timing of these feature announcements comes amid ongoing legal challenges directed at Roblox. The company faces multiple lawsuits alleging that its platform design facilitates exploitation by online predators targeting children. Notably, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit in August accusing Roblox of failing to implement adequate safety protocols to protect its underage users. Roblox has denied any intentional negligence, stating that accusations of knowingly exposing users to risk are unfounded.
To further bolster child safety, Roblox recently expanded its age estimation program, initially launched in July, to better verify user ages and tailor content accessibility accordingly.
Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki is scheduled to discuss the company’s latest developments during a live interview on CNBC at 4:15 p.m. ET.

Roblox’s introduction of Moments and AI-driven creation tools aims to enhance user engagement and content diversity, which could drive platform growth. However, ongoing legal challenges concerning child safety pose reputational and regulatory risks that may weigh on investor sentiment. The company’s efforts to strengthen moderation and age verification are positive steps but warrant close monitoring for effectiveness and regulatory response.
