Roblox Unveils Short-Video and AI Features Amid Child Safety Concerns

On Friday, Roblox announced the rollout of new short-video sharing and artificial intelligence (AI) tools on its platform as it navigates intensified scrutiny over child protection.

Introducing Moments: Short-Video Sharing for Users 13 and Older

The new feature, called Moments, permits users aged 13 and above to create and share brief clips of their gameplay with the Roblox community via an in-platform feed. To safeguard younger users, the company restricts viewing of videos from mature-rated games to only those who meet the age requirements.

Roblox safety chief Matt Kaufman emphasized that all videos shared through Moments will undergo moderation. Additionally, users will have the ability to flag inappropriate content, reinforcing community oversight. Moments is launching initially in a limited release starting Friday.

AI-Powered 3D Object Creation Enhances User Experience

Alongside Moments, Roblox will introduce AI capabilities before year’s end that allow creators to generate sophisticated 3D objects, such as futuristic vehicles, tailored to the aesthetic of their games. Senior Vice President of Engineering Anupam Singh highlighted that these AI-generated objects will also be subject to moderation to maintain platform safety and quality.

Roblox is currently confronting multiple lawsuits accusing the platform of facilitating exploitation of underage users by online predators. In August, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed suit, alleging Roblox’s failure to implement adequate safety protocols to protect children. Roblox has denied these claims, stating any suggestion of intentional risk to users is unfounded.

In response to ongoing concerns, Roblox recently announced an expansion of its age estimation program, initially launched in July, aiming to better identify and protect younger users.

Roblox’s introduction of Moments and AI-driven creation tools represents a strategic effort to enhance user engagement and content diversity, potentially driving increased platform activity and revenue. However, ongoing legal challenges related to child safety pose reputational and regulatory risks that could impact user trust and growth.

Investors should monitor the effectiveness of Roblox’s moderation systems and regulatory developments closely, as these factors will influence the company’s ability to sustain long-term growth while maintaining compliance.
