B.C. Supreme Court Upholds Government’s Right to Pause Power Connections for Crypto Miners
The B.C. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the provincial government’s decision to halt power connections for new cryptocurrency mining operations. The court upheld the government’s policy, which was implemented in December 2022 and paused new connections for 18 months. Conifex Timber Inc., a forestry company that had ventured into cryptocurrency mining, had brought the case to court in an attempt to have the policy declared invalid. However, Justice Michael Tammen ruled that the government’s move was reasonable and not discriminatory.
