Cronos Launches zkEVM Mainnet

Cronos Labs has officially launched its much-awaited zkEVM mainnet, marking a significant milestone in blockchain technology. Developed with the assistance of Matter Labs, this launch follows a highly successful testnet phase that began in December 2023, during which over 3 million wallets were created.

Understanding zkEVM

For those unfamiliar, zkEVM stands for zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine. It is a technology that allows for enhanced privacy and scalability in blockchain transactions. Zero-knowledge proofs are cryptographic tools that enable one party to prove to another that a statement is true, without revealing any information beyond the validity of the statement. In the context of blockchain, it means transactions can be verified without disclosing user data.

Bridging with Ethereum

A native Ethereum bridge is a key feature of the Cronos zkEVM, allowing assets to move seamlessly between the Cronos and Ethereum networks. This bridge offers users the flexibility to interact with a broader range of decentralized applications (dapps) and enhances liquidity.

The Benefits for Users

The launch is set to benefit the existing Cronos user base, which exceeds 100 million crypto holders. Users can explore a rich ecosystem filled with yield-generating opportunities. A notable incentive for users is the potential triple yield: the staking APR of liquid staked tokens such as zkCRO and vETH, yields from decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and loyalty points from ecosystem quests.

Building on Success

The Cronos zkEVM was preceded by the Cronos zkEVM Passage, a pre-launch deposit program that amassed 100 million CRO in deposits. This initiative ensured a stable launch with liquidity already in place and users ready to engage with the network.

Launch Partners and Ecosystem

The success of any layer 2 network is contingent upon its ecosystem. The Cronos zkEVM has already attracted a host of launch partners, including wallets like Crypto.com DeFi Wallet, Rabby, and MetaMask, and DeFi platforms such as VVS Finance, Fulcrum Finance, and Veno Finance.

Future Outlook

Currently in its alpha phase, expected to last until the end of September, Cronos zkEVM is gearing up for future growth. Developers plan to monitor performance and gather user feedback before transitioning to the beta phase. With the potential for high APRs and a robust community of dapps, the Cronos zkEVM is poised to offer Ethereum users a new frontier in the world of decentralized finance.
