Duane’s House of Pizza: New Ownership & Future Expansion

FARGO — Duane’s House of Pizza, a beloved spot in the Fargo-Moorhead area known for its tavern-style pizzas, has new franchise owners who are planning to open more locations. Slainte Hospitality, the investment group that also owns Blarney Stone pubs and the Hotel Donaldson in downtown Fargo, has purchased the franchising rights for Duane’s from long-time owner Steve Schultz.

“We’re very excited to be involved in a brand that has been around Fargo for decades and to make it even better,” said Jim Poolman from Slainte Hospitality. He mentioned that they are considering adding new locations, particularly near North Dakota State University in north Fargo and in other towns.

Potential New Locations

Poolman indicated that areas like Grand Forks, Bismarck, and Minnesota’s Lakes Country could be ideal for expansion. However, the current locations will continue to be independently operated:

  • 1629 S. University Drive, Fargo – Operated by Slice, LLC.
  • 4281 45th St. S., Fargo at SouthTown PourHouse – Owned by Chad Klimek.
  • 2223 Center Ave., Moorhead at Midtown Tavern – Owned by RKB Investments, Inc.

A Legacy of Quality

Steve Schultz, who now resides in Florida, shared that his family has been in the pizza business for nearly 70 years. Schultz personally made pizzas for 47 years and expressed that he will miss it. “It’s in the blood,” he remarked.

Poolman noted that there was a good relationship between the parties. Over time, conversations led to Schultz considering retirement and allowing Slainte Hospitality, with their restaurant experience, to take over the brand.

“Steve decided we were the right folks,” Poolman said, adding that Duane’s has been an iconic brand in Fargo. He sees room for growth despite the competitive market, given Duane’s high-quality product and strong brand reputation.

Personal Touch

Poolman, a Fargo native, shared his personal connection to Duane’s Pizza. “I grew up in Fargo, and Duane’s pizza was always a treat at my house. Never did I think that I would actually own it 40 years later. It’s exciting for me to be involved with these mainstay brands of Fargo that I grew up with."

Commitment to Quality

Slainte Hospitality is committed to maintaining Duane’s high standards. “Steve and his dad have built a great business that is consistently good and always striving to improve. We share the same mentality,” Poolman said.

“We’re very excited about the opportunities this provides and are looking forward to growing and expanding this great product,” he concluded.
