Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Moves to Slash Bureaucracy and Accelerate Innovation
Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy announced significant efforts to dismantle internal bureaucracy as part of a broader initiative to revamp the company’s culture and enhance its innovation capacity. Speaking at Amazon’s annual third-party seller conference in Seattle, Jassy underscored the need for the company to operate more like a startup to maintain competitive agility.
“Bureaucracy is really anathema to startups and to entrepreneurial organizations,” Jassy said. He noted that as organizations grow, layers of bureaucracy often accumulate unnoticed, which can stifle innovation and slow decision-making.
Organizational Flattening and Employee Feedback Channels
In line with his vision, Jassy set a target last year to increase worker-to-manager ratios by at least 15% by Q1 2025, aiming to flatten Amazon’s organizational structure. This move is intended to empower employees and reduce managerial overhead.
To identify and eliminate unnecessary processes, Amazon created a “no bureaucracy email alias,” inviting employees to report excessive rules or procedures. Since its inception, the company has received approximately 1,500 emails and implemented changes to around 455 processes based on employee feedback.
Cost-Cutting and Cultural Overhaul Amid AI Investment
Since taking over from founder Jeff Bezos in 2021, Jassy has aggressively pursued cost reductions, including laying off over 27,000 employees since 2022 and discontinuing some unprofitable initiatives. Despite these cuts, Amazon continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence technology, reflecting a dual strategy of efficiency and forward-looking innovation.
The CEO emphasized the importance of maintaining a “scrappy” startup mentality despite Amazon’s immense size, with its sprawling operations across retail, cloud computing, and advertising, and a global workforce exceeding 1.5 million employees.
“You have to keep remembering your roots and how useful it is to be scrappy,” Jassy stated, highlighting the cultural shift underpinning these operational changes.
