Waymo Gains Approval to Test Robotaxis at San Francisco International Airport

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle unit of Alphabet, has secured a permit to commence testing its robotaxi service at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), officials confirmed Tuesday. The announcement was made by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie alongside Waymo representatives.

According to company spokesperson Chris Bonelli, the rollout will occur in phases, starting with employee testing and progressing to public service for Bay Area riders. Initial operations will feature safety drivers onboard to intervene if necessary, with plans to transition to fully driverless rides in the future.

While Waymo currently operates robotaxi services in San Mateo County—which encompasses SFO—and parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, it had not previously been authorized to transport passengers to or from the airport.

Waymo has been expanding its airport access recently, having received permission last year to operate at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and earlier this month securing a similar permit at San Jose Mineta International Airport. Additionally, last month, Mayor Lurie allowed Waymo to provide limited passenger services on Market Street in San Francisco, a major corridor where such services were previously restricted.

Overall, Waymo’s robotaxi service is active in Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta. In Atlanta and Austin, Waymo is partnering with Uber to extend its autonomous ride-hailing offerings.

Meanwhile, Tesla has begun testing robotaxi services in Austin with human safety supervisors onboard but has yet to obtain airport permissions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tesla holds authorization to operate a paid car service in San Francisco but is not permitted to offer fully driverless ride-hailing. Notably, Tesla’s current vehicles do not meet safety standards for unsupervised autonomous operation, requiring a person ready to take control at any moment.

Waymo’s permit to test robotaxis at SFO marks a significant expansion of its autonomous vehicle footprint in a major urban and travel hub. This development is likely to enhance Waymo’s competitive positioning in the autonomous ride-hailing market, particularly against rivals like Tesla, which faces regulatory and technological constraints in the Bay Area.

Risks include potential regulatory hurdles and public acceptance challenges as fully driverless operations commence. Investors should monitor Waymo’s phased rollout progress and any changes in local regulations affecting autonomous vehicle operations.
