Cybersecurity Attacks Escalating in Ohio
Cybersecurity analysts report an uptick in cyber attacks across Ohio, with recent targets including two school systems. This follows high-profile ransomware attacks on Cleveland and Columbus earlier this summer. Analysts, such as Luke Connolly from Emsisoft, attribute these attacks to Ohio's robust economy and abundant potential targets. "Publicizing these attacks," Connolly notes, "makes it clear that everyone is at risk."
Dark Web Monitoring Reveals New Threats
Connolly's recent monitoring of the dark web uncovered a cyber gang's claim of targeting a major Ohio school district. The gang issued a ransom countdown, threatening to release sensitive data unless their demands are met. Connolly emphasizes that these attacks often target institutions like hospitals, which can risk lives, and schools, which typically operate on tight budgets.
Rhysida Group Targets Columbus
In July, the Rhysida group admitted to stealing databases from Columbus, compromising sensitive information related to juveniles and crime victims. This group frequently targets remote workers using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft software that were patched over four years ago. Connolly advises constant system upgrades to counteract these threats.
Calls for Enhanced Cybersecurity Measures
In response to these incidents, media outlets like ABC6 News have requested information on the Department of Technology's infrastructure, testing routines, and budget plans. While the city acknowledges these requests, the need for detailed cybersecurity protocols and adequate funding becomes increasingly urgent.
