Hill Harper's Tech and AI Strategy in His US Senate Campaign
The 2024 election cycle is upon us, bringing a surge of campaign activities, media attention, and policy debates that will shape voter decisions. In Michigan, Hill Harper, an acclaimed actor known for roles on 'CSI: NY' and 'The Good Doctor', has entered the race for the U.S. Senate.
Beyond his acting career, Harper is a Harvard Law School graduate, author, and small business owner. These achievements have equipped him with the experience and recognition to serve as a potential senator. His campaign centers on advocating for Michigan residents with priorities like economic growth, union job support, affordable healthcare, reproductive rights, student debt reduction, climate crisis action, sensible gun laws, and affordable housing.
Engaging Voters Through Technology
Harper recognizes the significant role of technology and social media in modern political campaigns. “I’ve attempted to use social media to engage with voters and the community to let them know and have an insight into what my platform is, who I’m engaging with, and what I’m actually learning from the voters,” Harper explained. This approach has provided valuable feedback, although he has faced challenges like algorithmic shadow banning after calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza war. Harper emphasizes the need for multi-layered verification to ensure authenticity in political discourse.
The Role of AI in Campaigns
Despite concerns over AI misuse, Harper acknowledges its benefits. “Just like any technology, it [AI] has the potential to be beneficial in terms of access to information, efficiency, and the ability to create,” he said. He stresses the importance of education in mitigating AI manipulation risks, stating, “There are dangers of manipulation, which is why I believe education must always take priority.”
Advocating for Privacy and Data Protection
As Michigan’s first Black American Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in nearly 30 years, Harper advocates for technology safety and data privacy. “I’m a fervent advocate for privacy and firmly against people’s data and information being for sale,” he asserted. Harper supports innovation but insists on safeguards against profiteering from consumer data extraction, ensuring a balance between technological advancement and constituent well-being.
