Heartwarming Rescue: Officer Saves Elderly Woman from Bitcoin Scam in North Texas
WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — 84-year-old woman almost lost her life savings to a Bitcoin fraud scheme, but thanks to a local good Samaritan and a quick-acting police officer, she was saved just in time.
A Dangerous Transaction
At a Chevron gas station off I-30 in White Settlement, Texas, the elderly woman was spotted depositing thousands of dollars into a Bitcoin machine. The scene caught the attention of Mindy Jordan, who approached the woman and overheard suspicious conversations on the phone. Quickly realizing that the woman was possibly being scammed, Jordan took action.
Quick Intervention
The woman was allegedly coerced by callers claiming to be from her bank and had already brought $44,000 in cash to the gas station. Concerned for her safety, Jordan immediately called the police. Sgt. James Stewart arrived on the scene and took control of the situation, speaking strongly to the scammer on the phone and ultimately intervening before more money could be lost.
A Happy Outcome
Thankfully, Jordan and Sgt. Stewart managed to stop the transaction in time, saving the woman from a major financial loss. On Saturday, Chief of Police Christopher Cook provided an uplifting update: Sgt. Stewart presented the woman with a check for $23,900, which was recovered from the Bitcoin ATM. Following this, Stewart escorted the grateful woman to Chase bank to safely re-deposit her money.
Team Effort
Chief Cook also praised Lt. Denise Callahan for her efforts in working with Bitcoin platforms to recover the woman's money. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and community support in preventing financial scams.
Beware of Phone Scams
The White Settlement Police Department reminds everyone that banks and law enforcement will never ask for money over the phone. Stay alert and always report suspicious activities.
