Hiker Rescued After Taking Wrong Turn in Angeles National Forest
A hiker’s adventure took a dangerous turn over the weekend when he became lost in the Angeles National Forest. The hiker, who was hoping to see Switzer Falls, had to be rescued after taking a wrong turn near the Arroyo Seco Research Foundation, located next to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The incident was reported to a volunteer rescue crew just before 8 p.m. Fortunately, the hiker activated the emergency transponder feature on his iPhone 14, which allowed authorities to be contacted. Using satellite text messages, the rescue crew, led by volunteer Mike Leum and a trainee, communicated with the hiker, instructing him to stay in place.
After approximately an hour and a half, Leum and his team were able to locate the lost hiker. In an effort to bring him to safety, the hiker and the rescue crew embarked on a two-hour hike, at times wading through water up to their knees.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness while enjoying outdoor activities. It also highlights the potential lifesaving capabilities of Apple’s emergency SOS satellite feature. Launched with the iPhone 14, this feature enables users to connect with emergency services through text messaging, even in areas with no cellular or wireless signal. It can automatically alert emergency services during accidents or significant falls.
This is not the first time the satellite SOS technology has played a crucial role in rescues. Last December, it helped locate two crash victims in the Angeles National Forest after their car plummeted 300 feet off a cliff.
The hiker’s misadventure serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the need for caution, proper navigation, and the utilization of technology to ensure safety while exploring the great outdoors.
