Internet Provider Lumos Plans Fiber Optic Expansion in New Hanover County
Internet provider Lumos has announced plans to begin construction on 655 miles of fiber optic technology in New Hanover County. This follows Lumos’ initial announcement in April 2023, outlining its $56 million investment in fiber optic infrastructure in various parts of Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro.
The permitting process, which allows Lumos to build in the rights-of-way and mitigate any potential disruptions caused by construction, is well underway. Lumos is actively collaborating with the City of Wilmington, homeowners, businesses, and developers to ensure a smooth and safe installation of the 100% fiber-optic internet network in the neighborhood.
Backed by local leaders, Lumos Networks and NorthState recently unveiled their unified brand, Lumos, in August 2022. This support has enabled Lumos to expand its operations and invest in the Wilmington area, ultimately connecting underserved communities with high-speed, reliable fiber optic internet.
Lumos’ initiative to bring fiber optic technology to New Hanover County aligns with the increasing demand for faster and more reliable internet connectivity. Fiber optic internet offers higher speeds, improved reliability, and better signal quality compared to traditional copper-based connections.
The construction of this extensive fiber optic network will undoubtedly enhance the digital infrastructure of the area, attracting potential economic growth and providing residents and businesses with the ability to fully utilize the benefits of a modern, high-speed internet connection.
As Lumos continues its infrastructure development in New Hanover County, residents and businesses can look forward to the arrival of 100% fiber-optic internet, bringing them on par with the most technologically advanced regions.
