Stellantis to Adopt Tesla’s Charging Standard for Fast Charging in North America
Stellantis, the latest major automaker to jump on the electric vehicle (EV) bandwagon, has announced its adoption of Tesla’s North America Charging Standard (NACS) port for fast charging.
The company’s announcement revealed its plan to introduce NACS connectors in 2025 for its 2026-model-year EVs. To ensure compatibility, Stellantis will use adapters for existing EVs that feature the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) ports. This move will allow drivers to access a growing infrastructure of NACS stations and take advantage of fast charging capabilities.
As a funder of the Ionna fast-charging network, Stellantis is committed to setting up 30,000 DC fast-charging points. These stations will offer both CCS and NACS connectors, expanding the options for public charging and delivering convenience to customers.
While Stellantis did not specify which of its brands would be the first to adopt the NACS port, it did emphasize the STLA Large EV platform’s potential. This platform has the capability to support up to eight models, including potential offerings from popular brands like Dodge and Jeep. Additionally, there is speculation about the potential release of a $25,000 EV.
With Stellantis joining the ranks, all major EV brands, except for Mitsubishi, which currently does not offer an all-electric model in North America, are gearing up to embrace the NACS port. This move further solidifies the standardization of EV charging systems, bringing us one step closer to a greener transportation future.
