Nokia and A1 Conduct First-Ever 5G Edge Cloud Network Slicing Trial with Microsoft
Telecommunications giants Nokia and A1 have successfully completed a groundbreaking trial, marking the first time a 5G edge cloud network slicing trial has been conducted in the media industry. In partnership with Microsoft, the trial employed Nokia’s cutting-edge 5G edge slicing solution, which seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Azure, to manage A1’s live commercial network.
The deployment of edge cloud network slicing allowed A1 to transmit high-definition (HD) video streaming to mobile devices using Multicasting.io’s streaming mobile platform, all while maintaining a secure, high-capacity, and low-latency network. Marcus Grausam, CEO of A1, lauded Nokia’s innovative solution, stating that it enables A1 to deliver secure and reliable enterprise VPN services, with seamless integration with edge cloud applications, across both 4G/LTE and 5G networks.
What makes Nokia’s solution particularly unique is its provision of a sliced mobile broadband virtual private network (VPN) in specific business areas like campuses or cities. This capability empowers businesses to enjoy the advantages of network slicing and edge cloud applications, significantly enhancing the overall customer experience.
Tommi Uitto, Nokia’s President of Mobile Networks, explained how edge cloud network slicing amalgamates the best of both worlds, offering customers unparalleled network slicing features and seamlessly integrated edge cloud applications that elevate the enterprise customer experience.
A1’s data center in Vienna served as the deployment site for Azure managed edge computing technology, with connectivity to the Azure region in Austria to support the trial.
This collaboration between A1, Nokia, and Microsoft is further evidence of Microsoft’s dedication to innovation. Silvia Candiani, Vice President of Telecommunications and Media at Microsoft, emphasized their commitment to redefining connectivity, highlighting the opportunities for industry leaders like A1 and Nokia to tap into Microsoft’s vast ecosystem of enterprise developers and solution providers. This, in turn, will facilitate new and exciting avenues for monetization.
The successful completion of this 5G edge cloud network slicing trial brings us one step closer to a future with seamless, high-performance networks that can adapt and enhance the needs of today’s fast-paced world.
