Pakistan Holds National Elections with High Security Measures
Pakistan is holding its national elections today, with over 12.8 crore voters expected to cast their ballots to choose a new government. To mark the occasion, Google showcased a special doodle depicting a voting paper being placed into a ballot box with the sign of the national flag on it. The country has taken extensive security measures, with 90,000 polling stations open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, and more than 650,000 army, paramilitary, and police personnel providing security. In addition, Pakistan has closed its borders with Iran and Afghanistan for the day for security purposes.
Diversity and Contention Among Candidates
Nearly 18,000 candidates are standing for seats in the national and four provincial assemblies. The national assembly has 266 directly contested seats, with an additional 70 reserved for women and minorities. The regional parliaments have a total of 749 places. Among the main contenders for the top post are Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and the candidates of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Analysts predict that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to win the most seats in the vote.
Violence and Tensions Leading up to Election Day
Just a day before the election, two separate bomb blasts outside the offices of election candidates in southwestern Pakistan claimed the lives of at least 28 people. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for both bombings, heightening tensions and concerns over security during the election. Additionally, the election has been marred by allegations of pre-poll rigging.
Post-Election Challenges and IMF Bailout
The outcome of the election is expected to have a significant impact on Pakistan’s future direction. If a clear majority is not achieved, the task of addressing multiple challenges will be difficult. One of the priorities for the new government will be seeking a new bailout program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the current one is set to expire in March. Analysts anticipate that unofficial first results will be available a few hours after voting closes at 5 p.m., with a clearer picture emerging early on Friday.
