Cyber Attack on Nevada Gaming Control Board Website

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has become the latest target of a cyber attack, as reported by the organization on Thursday. The board announced that its public-facing website had been compromised and had displayed a warning stating that it “may be hacked” when searched on Google. In response to the attack, the board immediately took the website offline and enlisted the help of experts to assess the situation. While working to restore the full website, they plan to publish a temporary website for users seeking access to information and relevant links. The board has not yet confirmed if any personal or financial data was stolen during the attack.

Previous Cyber Attacks in Nevada

This incident is part of a string of cyber attacks that have targeted various agencies and companies in Nevada. In September 2023, MGM Resorts fell victim to a cyber attack, resulting in the shutdown of several systems, including telephones, the casino system, the hotel system, and the key system. MGM Resorts CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle referred to the attack as “corporate terrorism,” but assured the public that no ransom was paid to the hackers, and all systems were restored.

Another major attack occurred in September, when Caesars Entertainment disclosed that hackers had gained access to its loyalty program database, compromising Social Security and driver’s license numbers of members. However, the company stated that there was no evidence of bank account or payment card information being stolen.

The Clark County School District also experienced a cybersecurity incident in October, where hackers accessed personal information of students, parents, and employees through the email system. Fortunately, no cases of identity theft related to the breach were reported.

These incidents highlight the increasing threat cyber attacks pose to organizations across Nevada, prompting the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and vigilance in safeguarding sensitive information.

Analyst comment

This news is negative. The cyber attack on the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s website is a concerning development, especially considering the previous cyber attacks that have occurred in Nevada. It signifies the increasing threat of cyber attacks in the state, which will likely lead to heightened cybersecurity measures and a focus on safeguarding sensitive information in the market.
