Mercer University faculty in the Department of Informatics and Mathematics are sharing their expertise with the community through free, public information sessions at the Alpharetta Library.

As part of this initiative, the Department of Informatics and Mathematics is hosting a series of information sessions at the Alpharetta Library. These sessions provide an opportunity for community members to learn from experts in various fields, ask questions, and participate in discussions.
Health Care Technology for Patients: Improving Access and Empowering Individuals
The next information session will be led by Dr. Awatef Ben Ramadan, assistant professor and program coordinator for information technology and informatics. Dr. Ramadan’s talk, titled “Health Care Technology for Patients,” will take place on January 27 at 11 a.m. This informative session will focus on patient portals and how these technologies can help individuals take control of their health information. Attendees will learn how to use these tools to track their own data and understand the convenience they offer.
Machine Learning in Health Care: Transforming Patient Care Through Data Analysis
In a previous session, Dr. Vikraman Baskaran, associate professor and program coordinator for health informatics, gave an insightful presentation on “Machine Learning in Health Care.” This talk highlighted the important role that machine learning plays in revolutionizing patient care. Dr. Baskaran explored how data analysis can improve medical diagnoses, treatment plans, and overall patient outcomes.
Strengthening Community Engagement: A Tradition of Service
The Department of Informatics and Mathematics has a strong tradition of community outreach and engagement. In the past, the department has organized events such as Informatics Day, where community members were invited to Mercer’s Atlanta campus for assistance with technology issues. During these events, students provided technical support and engaged in discussions about potential capstone projects. This year, Informatics Day is scheduled for April 6 and promises to be another community-building event.

In 2018, the Department of Informatics and Mathematics received a mini-grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities to advance civic learning and social responsibility within student majors.
